Why Most RTOs Fail?

By Mini Cainer · 27 Feb 2025

Nearly 40% of RTOs in Australia shut down within five years. That’s not a scare tactic—it’s just the reality. And it’s not just because of compliance issues (though that’s a big one). It’s about bad leadership, poor money management, and a total misunderstanding of what running an RTO actually involves.

If you’re thinking about starting an RTO or yours is barely hanging on, you need to hear this. I’m not here to sugar-coat anything. This is the stuff no one tells you when you’re getting started.

Prioritising Money Over Quality

This is the fastest way to kill your RTO. Too many people chase funding and enrolments, cramming as many students in as possible without caring about the actual training. They see government dollars and get greedy. But when you cut corners, your training quality tanks. And once word gets out that your courses are garbage, you’re finished. ASQA will catch on eventually, and you don’t want to be on their radar for the wrong reasons.

Thinking Compliance Is Just Paperwork

Compliance isn’t some checklist you do once and forget about. It’s an ongoing job that needs proper systems and constant updates. ASQA rules change all the time, and they’re not interested in excuses. If you’re not willing to stay on top of this, don’t bother running an RTO. And no, you can’t just “fix it later” when an audit is looming. If you’re not already compliant, you’re already behind.

Poor Cash Flow Management

A lot of RTOs go under because they can’t handle their finances. They blow through cash chasing growth, hire too many people, or spend big on marketing without thinking long-term. Then the bills come in, the income doesn’t, and they’re scrambling to stay afloat. If you’re bad with money, get help. Seriously. Cash flow can make or break you.

Hiring Cheap, Inexperienced Trainers

You can’t build a strong RTO with weak trainers. If you’re hiring the cheapest people you can find or settling for average just to fill spots, you’re setting yourself up to fail. Students aren’t stupid—they know when they’re being short-changed. And once your reputation’s damaged, good luck fixing it. Pay for quality. It’s that simple.

Ignoring Marketing (Or Doing It Wrong)

Marketing isn’t just about running ads. It’s about showing potential students why they should trust you and how your courses can actually help them. If your marketing is just “Enrol Now!” spam, you’re doing it wrong. Share real student stories, show your training in action, and prove that you’re worth their time and money.

The Hard Truth

Running an RTO is hard work. If you’re not willing to do the boring stuff—compliance, quality control, smart hiring, proper financial management—don’t even start. But if you’re serious about it, and you’re willing to do the work that most people avoid, you’ll be ahead of 90% of your competition.

It’s not easy, and it’s definitely not glamorous. But if you’re up for it, the rewards are there. Just don’t expect it to be handed to you.
